Just this week I had the pleasure of coming across FM Radio, an indie-country duo with an incredibly sunny disposition, so sweet that I can’t stop listening. While they haven’t seen much commercial radio success, they’ve had major placements on shows like Ugly Betty, Hart of Dixie and most recently, Pretty Little Liars. Both members have a gentle, almost whisper of a voice, full of tone and emotion that become the core of each of their tracks. Together, they craft beautiful harmonies that layer their song with dimension and intrigue. While members Tim Myers and Schuyler Fisk (their last names are where they get the FM in the name) have seen success on their own, they came together five years ago on a one-off project and decided to stick it out. Luckily, country music was given a brand new group with a gorgeous sound. Their first full length album, Out of the Blue, is a laid back, romantic album that works perfectly for those breezy summer days we have in California. Which may be why they label themselves as something of a California Country band. There’s a slightly different sound than the country of the south (as if it’s country but dipped in sunshine), but still heavy with story telling, love of love and a simple but beautiful life. With a flowing and daydreamishly simple instrumentation, the album has an almost acoustic vibe, as if it was drawn from the 60’s and 70’s. Forever a fan of harmony-based groups, I found myself taken by FM Radio from my first listen of Leave the Light On, and I was equally impressed by the rest of the album.
