Jake Owen’s latest single “Days Of Gold” is the undeniable anthem of a Southern summer. His recent impromptu block party brought the lucky residents of Nashville the party of the summer. The name The Cadillac Three probably rings a bell now – the Tennessee trio kicked off the infamous block party that evening.
What you probably didn’t already know is that “Days Of Gold” is an original track by The Cadillac Three. The band, comprised of Nashvillians Jaren Johnston, Kelby Ray and Neil Mason, have already opened for acts such as ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Church and Eli Young Band.
The band describes their sound as “country fuzz” and frankly, I can’t think of a better way to describe it myself. In May, they released their self-titled, self-produced debut album which includes the guitar heavy, head banging worthy songs such as “I’m Southern,” “Tennessee Mojo,” “Get Your Buzz On,” “Turn It On” and of course “Days Of Gold.” One of my personal favorites is the emotional “Whiskey Soaked Redemption.”
Jaren’s voice is smooth, yet gritty, drips slow like honey and keeps you wanting more throughout the entire record. It’s almost impossible to believe that he wrote Keith Urban’s hit “You Gonna Fly.” Almost. Because the incredibly talented song-writer has also written for country super stars Dierks Bentley, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney and Sara Evans and was nominated for Music Row Magazine’s “Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year” in 2012.
I can’t really compare The Cadillac Three to another band, because right now there really isn’t. The country rock vibe of the band gives them a timeless sound and the entire record instills images of badass best friends hanging out by the river, powering through their youth with a beer in hand and a cigarette in the other. It almost feels dirty. And I like it.
