In a turn of events that frankly left me pretty shocked, I returned home last night to the news that Kacey Musgraves would be joining Katy Perry on her Prismatic tour. While I understand the association of women that speak out and stand up for what’s right, strong women that have paved a road for themselves in this tough, male dominated industry… it still makes very little sense to me.
The tour, which begins this June, will also include Capital Cities and Tegan and Sara. Perry is one of few artists that doesn’t seem to care about sticking with her own genre when it comes to her opening acts, which is great, but at the same time I just can’t see many of Katy’s fans being into Kacey. My hope is that the exposure will be enough for her, gain her a wider following, and hopefully see a very successful turn around from this tour. This isn’t the first time that Katy and Kacey have shared a stage, Kacey was part of the CBS Radio We Can Survive Concert alongside Katy just a few months back.
I’m interested to see how this plays out. I’d love to catch Kacey live, but I’m not willing to shell out the cash that comes with a huge Katy Perry production. So while she may be gaining some new fans that otherwise wouldn’t listen to her, she’s also alienating her own audience that may not be so in to going to a Katy show.
I guess we’ll see how this plays out. What do you think of Kacey Musgraves heading out on tour with Katy Perry? Leave a comment below or tweet us @JukeboxMixtape
