I had a lot of different experiences with music that have lead me down the road to country. It was always something that was in my life, being that my grandmother was from the south, and consistently played artists from the genre throughout my youth. I had my love affair with bubblegum pop music (which I still love to this day) and then, as I was diving deeper into musical discovery and my education, found my heart in country music. There were a lot of reasons for this, most of all, the quality of the music and the dedication the genre has to storytelling. I love a beautiful, tragic, happy, amazing story. But today’s Throwback Thursday was one of the highlights for me in my decision to study country, to give myself over to the genre, and to become a truly immersed fan. It’s not just the tragic story in Whiskey Lullaby, it’s the intensity of the music and the sorrowful harmonies that immediately grab your attention, before even a word is sung. I’ve always been a fan of male/female vocal duets, another reason that country music was such a big deal to me, you don’t find that much in rock or pop. The dynamic between Brad and Alison’s voices in this song is just heartbreaking. Both artists are experts in emoting and infusing every moment of a melody with authentic truth.
Enjoy taking a walk back into time with Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss on Whiskey Lullaby.
