Holly Williams has a long history in the country music genre. As the granddaughter to the iconic Hank Williams, and daughter to Hank Williams Jr; she’s got music flowing through her blood in every sense. This is most apparent in her songwriting, full of beautiful melodies and intense stories that speak to your heart as much as it does your ears. Her music is both authentic and timeless, it could have been written back when her grandfather was making music, but it fits perfectly into the tapestry of today’s sound as well.
Her performance style is classic and subtle, a girl with a guitar who seamlessly infuses emotion into every note, and a voice that floats over the melody with ease. Furthermore, she’s a beautiful storyteller, giving the audience a little back story on each and every song she sang, including difficult ones about the loss of her grandparents that had clearly shaken her. She covered a wide variety of classic hits, like Bonnie Raitt’s “Angel From Mountgomery” and her grandfathers “I Saw The Light” that gave praise to the original song while allowing her to shine her own style on it. Her vocals are perfection, she’s got an angelic voice that is addictive and attention grabbing, once she starts singing you don’t want her to stop.
Her 2013 release, “The Highway” is full of stunning vocal arrangements and subtle instrumentation that allows her songwriting skills to shine through in a beautifully constructed way. It was a pleasure seeing Williams take the stage and I hope to do it again soon.
