Little Big Town will be back in a big way when they release their sixth studio album, Pain Killer, on October 24th via Capitol Records Nashville.
With their first single, Day Drinking, already a major success, the Jay Joyce produced album is expected to sweep this years charts and the hearts of country fans across the nation. The group has been adamant about their participation in their newest release, proving their songwriting prowess on the first single Day Drinking are Karen Fairchild, Jimi Westbrook, Phillip Sweet (along with songwriters Troy Verges and Barry Dean); showing that their turn at songwriting is undoubtedly going to produce a few more major hits. In fact, of Pain Killer‘s 13 tracks, the foursome participated in the writing of eight, putting their own personal influences even deeper into the folds of the music. Other songwriters that have lent their words and melodies to the release include Lori Mckenna, Hillary Lindsey, Liz Rose, and Shane McAnally; to name a few.
This album comes on the heels of one of their biggest critical and commercial successes yet, their chart topping, multi-million-selling Tornado. Their last release spawned the Grammy Award and CMA Winning song, Pontoon, which was coined the song of the summer back in 2012. It was a departure from the sound the country genre had heard from Little Big Town before, diving deeper into a southern rock vibe with atmospheric sensibilities, and we can expect more of the same on Pain Killer. One major difference is the Kimberly Schlapman lead heavy track Save Your Sin, which is said to showcase the vocalist in a way that few fans have yet to hear.
“We knew the record was going to be called Pain Killer way on into the process because we love that song,” Fairchild tells Rolling Stone Country. “That song is really kind of tongue-in-cheek — ‘be the person that numbs my pain.’ We started talking about tying that thread through the whole record, to ease your pain. Don’t we want the whole record to do that for people, anyway? Whether it’s a sad moment, or a song that’s more thoughtful and has a lot more substance in the lyric, we want music to take us away. Pain Killer fits, that’s the common thread through all the songs.”
