There has been a distinct lack of updates over the past week, and I apologize for that, there was some craziness happening in my life that will hopefully be resolved by the end of the day today. In the meantime, there are some really great songs I’ve been listening to over the past few days that I’m super excited to share with you. For instance, did you know that Sam Hunt‘s Montevallo is officially out now? Or that Taylor Swift‘s new album is getting covered like she’s running for President of the United States? It’s that serious on the news this morning.
All that aside, I’ve had the chance to rock out to some good stuff. So take a look below and let me know what you’re listening to right now by leaving me a comment. Or, ya know, tweet me @JukeboxMixtape.
Sam Hunt – Make You Miss Me
Sam Hunt has been the rising star of the year in country music, and this album has been the talk of Nashville for some time, causing a flurry of anticipation. While the little tidbits we got in advance of the full length left little to be desired for me, there are some songs I’ve discovered that I’m really into off the full length. I almost wish there were more of these emotional, subdued songs, in place of the rapping or blasting bombastic beats. Because, you know, it’s not really country music that he’s making. If we’re going to be honest. It’s just not. Maybe that’s his point, but then why is it being marketed as country? Either way, my favorite song on Montevallo (other than his excellent original version of Cop Car) is the emotional Make You Miss Me. Take a listen!
Billy Currington – Don’t
While this song fits perfectly into the landscape of country radio today, it also has such a great feel to it, that it’s impossible not to enjoy listening. The bumping beat that pulses under a lush chorus makes you want to start singing along, maybe even throw your hands up in the air. Billy has that smooth voice that rolls over the melody with ease and precision. But more than that, it’s just a fun song to bop along to in the car.
Leighton Meester – Good For One Thing
I’ve been waiting forever for Leighton Meester to release her album. All the little videos and sneak peaks that she’s been releasing over the years have managed to heighten my anticipation for her album. I love her unique voice, her point of view, the folky way she loses herself in the lyrics. Her debut, Heartstrings, is full of soft, sweet reflections of life that undulate effortlessly from one emotion to the next. I’m a little bit obsessed with her. A little bit obsessed with it. But if you only have time to listen to one song this morning, check out Good For One Things.
Haley & Michaels – Light It
No surprise here, I heard this duo’s cover of 500 Miles on XM’s The Highway and wanted to check them out. It was exciting to discover they just released a self-titled debut EP that’s full of beautiful vocals, soaring harmonies, and introspective thoughts on love lost. One of my favorite is the rushing Light It, with the inspirational chorus that builds up around you as you listen, sucking you into the moment and making you feel as invincible as the melody itself. They have that whole whiplash of vocals things down pat. And I can’t get enough of it.
The Shires – Nashville Grey Skies
Again with the male/female duos. I just can’t stop, it’s an addiction of the highest form. But you NEED to hear this song. If you listen to nothing else, turn this on, and experience the wave of happiness that washes over you. It’s intoxicating. It will make you want to pack up all your things, jump in the car, and move right to Nashville. Like immediately. The Shires, who I’ve talked about before, are on the rise. I can’t wait to see what comes next for this incredibly talented duo out of the UK.
