A few weeks back I included Sammy Hakim in my Weekend Spin column. Her single, Empty Bottle, was immediately attention grabbing; a super fun song that encompasses the unique togetherness that summer inspires. Not one to rest on one single good song, Sammy has been hard at work on her brand new EP, which she’ll be releasing through Pledge Music (you can take part by heading over to her official website). The dynamic vocalist is also a dedicated songwriter, with several songs that have charted across a variety of different genres, and a plethora of songwriter competition wins and association memberships in her back pocket. She’s continuing her musical education by studying at the rockstar machine in Boston, Berklee College of Music. As far as females go, shes one of the ones you’re going to want to keep your eye on in the country music scene. With a voice like that, and plenty of emotional inspiration, she’s on the verge of something big.
Check out our interview below and keep your eye out for her new EP. In the meantime, pleasure your ears with her radio ready single Empty Bottle.
How old were you when you first realized you wanted to play music?
I didn’t take it seriously until I was about 13 years old, but looking back I don’t think there was ever a time where I wasn’t around music. I was blessed to grow up with music as a constant in my life.
How did you get into songwriting and what drew you to the craft?
My best friend in 7th grade was OBSESSED with Nick Jonas. She kept going on an on about how she was going to marry him and one day I asked her how. She told me she would be an actress and I said “Fine. I’ll be a singer” and I started writing my own songs the day after!
Which artists have been influential on the development of your sound?
Any artist making a career in todays industry is an inspiration to me. I must admit I love Ed Sheeran, Bruce Springsteen, Kelly Clarkson, Fall Out Boy, Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift, and many many more.
Your new single “Empty Bottle” has such a carefree, summer-inspired sound. Tell me a little bit about the inspiration behind the song?
That song was meant to be just that! I wrote the song thinking about having fun, hanging out in the summer with people you love to hang out with.
When you sit down to write songs, what life experiences or moments tend to inspire you to write the most?
When I sit down to write, anything could inspire me. I love to write about an emotion or moment that makes me feel something. I’ve written about friends, their stories, personal experiences, and things that I thought may be interesting.
You have a new EP coming out this year, tell me a little bit about what we can expect to hear?
Well, I’m releasing my new EP in a new way, which I’m really excited about. I’m releasing through http://www.pledgemusic.com
primarily to give people a chance to experience the album creation with me. Pledge has allowed me to really take my fans behing the scenes and allow them to help create my project with me. It’ll be great, I can’t wait!!
You’ve had so much success with songwriting in the independent market, tell me a little about your songwriting process? Is it easier to collaborate with other writers or go it alone?
My songwriting process can range from 2 minutes to 2 hours, and it’s always unique. I love co-writing because you get the amazing opportunity to have other brilliant minds working on a song together.
With a new single and EP, what else do you have planned for 2015?
School! Berklee College of Music has been amazing to me, I’ve already learned so much! Hopefully I’ll get to release some more stuff, meet some more fans, play some more shows.. the good life 🙂
When you’re getting ready to go out for a night with friends, what three songs would you pick to get everyone pumped up for the evening?
Well right now I absolutely love:
Leave the Night – Sam Hunt
Sing – Ed Sheeran
Going out like that – Reba Mcentire
But anything up beat and singable makes for a good night!!!
Thanks again to Sammy for taking the time to tell me a little bit more about her new EP and single Empty Bottle. Be sure to pick it up on iTunes now!
