When Fashion Meets Music: Pony Show’s Pippin Chapman highlights her favorite things!

If you remember my first time exploring the vintage side of East Nashville, you’ll remember how quickly I fell in love with Pony Show. Since then, I’ve beIMG_1814en back a couple times to buy something that caught my eye and am completely obsessed with everything in there. Pippin Chapman, the owner of Pony Show, was gracious enough to fill me in on how she finds her beautiful vintage items, what her favorite trends are, and how to be true to yourself through fashion.

Check out her sound advice, amazing musical taste, and pictures of her current favorite items in the store. Then when you get a chance, head out to visit her in East Nashville and see these amazing finds for yourself. I promise you, they’re even better in person.

How would you describe your own personal fashion?

I love changing up my look from day to day with fun pieces, I don’t mind if things get a little costume-y. Dressing up is fun! I tend to always go back to my favorite standbys though- fringe boots or platform sandals, vintage tees and little bitty shorts.
What current trends do you love and how do you feel you can take a trend and make it unique?
I’ve been wearing fringe everything for years and the last year or so it’s everywhere now, so that’s sort of bittersweet! I think it’s fun to try on different trends and experiment with a look you may not usually wear. In cooler months I love throwing in blazers and other sort of more structured menswear pieces in with my lacey stuff, contrast is fun. I think mixing in really classic vintage pieces with more trendy items is a great way to make a look your own. Or sourcing vintage items that fit current trends- that way you won’t see someone else wearing your same outfit! Pretty much all my fringe items are vintage.

What three items in your store are you currently obsessed with?IMG_0594

Well, it’s finally warm enough to wear cute stuff! I adore crop tops and have been wearing my Dixieland Delight and Kiss My Grits! crops a ton! They’re the perfect mix of cute and sassy. There’s a red leather skirt in the shop that is just a teensy bit too small for me and I’m constantly tempted to take it home, I think that qualifies as obsessed! I hope someone buys it soon so I’m no longer tempted! The candles I sell are my third obsession, I’m a candle junky and these are GOOD! They’re made right in the neighborhood with soy wax, so they burn clean, and last about 100 hours! I always have one going at the shop, and burn them at home too. I always have a Catalina and a Golden Rose at the house. They smell heavenly!
When it comes to vintage items, how do you know when you’ve found something really special?
I love finding vintage items that I’ve never seen before- something really unique and different. One of the great features of lots of vintage items, is the care and time that went into them. Things really were made better in the past, the quality is obvious. The magic is often in the little details of an item- things that are handpainted, or have a special finish or stitching can be very special. Beyond that, you just have to feel it! Some items just speak to me more than others, that’s a big part of the fun of treasure hunting!

IMG_0552Fashion and Music both inspire people across the world. What kind of music inspires you to feel and look good? What songs are currently in rotation in your store?
Like my fashion, I feel my musical taste is pretty varied, but it often goes back to the 70s! Led Zepplin, Fleetwood Mac, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Rodney Crowell are some favorites. I grew up listening to those artists as well as great classic country, George Jones, Loretta Lynn and my beloved Dolly Parton, all courtesy of my parents. I like to keep music on at the shop, all week I’ve been listening to Stevie Wonder– we got to see him at Bridgestone this week and it was amazing! It’s fun to mix it up though, we play everything I’ve listed above but sometimes you’re in the mood for Motown or some Guns n Roses. I do try to keep it upbeat at the store, slow, sad stuff isn’t good for sales! No one wants to cry while they’re shopping. I also love listening to local folks, we have so many great ones!! Current favorites are: Lauren Shera, The Weeks, Kelsey Walden, and Lindi Ortega.
Be sure to follow Pippin on all her socials for inspiring pieces and new items she adds to her store. You can find her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter in addition to visiting her official site and blog. As for those candles, I have two burning in my place right now, and they’re as amazing as she says they are.
Huge thanks to Pippin for taking the time to answer these questions!
