If you haven’t heard of East of Eli, you need to.

An eclectic blend of folk and pop with a hint of electronic vibes, East of Eli brought his fresh mix of sounds to the Brooklyn music scene at the Knitting Factory on April 27th, 2017. It was clear from the energy in the room that Nathan West has developed a fanbase that’s both DSC_6742dedicated and excited. In fact, upon my arrival the line was wrapped around the front of the venue, with eager fans that rushed to the front of the stage the second the doors opened.

From the very first atmospheric notes, this audience grasped onto the music and didn’t stop moving or singing along until the last chord faded away.

Every single track is designed to get people grooving. From the infectious earworm, Crazy Beautiful, to the meandering mid-tempo that is The Siege; there wasn’t a single moment that wasn’t wrapped in inspirational movement. Beyond just crafting addictive melodies, East of Eli lives to tell stories about falling in love, surviving the worst that life throws at you, and being your own inspiration.

One of the highlights of the show was when Nathan pulled a lucky fan on stage to take the place of his wife, CW’s Supergirl star Chyler Leigh, on the track Nowhere. It seemed to be a moment written in the stars, the fan knew every word and harmony, making for a beautiful impromptu duet. Though fans were disappointed that Chyler couldn’t make it due to a plane delay, this magical moment seemed to lift them out of that disappointment almost instantly.

From flower crowns to glow sticks, this was an audience that was invested and devoted to a musician who pulls out all the stops to deliver a show that is both conversational and inspirational. If you get the chance to check out this New York local, do it.

Check out East of Eli’s newest single, Nowhere featuring Chyler Leigh, out now!
